Tax-Deductible Donations to Canteen

Tax-Deductible Donations to Charity in Australia
EOFY 2025/26

Are Donations to Charities Tax Deductible in Australia?

Yes. Donations of $2 or more to Canteen Australia are tax deductible. Canteen is a registered Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR, ABN 77 052 040 516) endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office. When you donate, you receive an emailed tax receipt you can use when lodging your Australian tax return.

How Tax-Deductible Donations Work in Australia

In Australia, a tax-deductible donation is a gift of $2 or more to a charity endorsed by the ATO as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR). The amount you donate is subtracted from your taxable income, which reduces the tax you owe. Your tax saving depends on your marginal tax rate. For example, donating $100 at a 32.5% tax rate reduces your tax bill by around $32.50. You must not receive anything of material value in return, and you'll need a receipt to claim.

When you donate to a Deductible Gift Recipient, the amount you give is subtracted from your taxable income. That reduces the tax you owe at the end of the financial year.

To qualify, your donation must be a genuine gift (meaning you don't receive goods or services in return). There is no upper limit on what you can claim in a single financial year, provided the donation meets ATO requirements.

Description

Most Australian charities email a tax receipt automatically after you donate. For one-off donations, you'll typically receive this within minutes. For monthly giving programs, charities usually send one consolidated receipt after 30 June covering all donations made during that financial year.

Title
Can businesses claim tax deductions for charitable donations in Australia?
Description

Yes. Businesses can claim tax deductions for donations to DGR-registered charities in Australia, provided the donation is a genuine gift and the business receives nothing of material value in return. The deduction is claimed as a business expense in the relevant tax year. Canteen is endorsed by the ATO as a DGR, so eligible business donations qualify. Businesses should check with their accountant for advice specific to their circumstances.

Title
Can I claim a deduction on all donations I make?
Description

Not all donations qualify. To claim a tax deduction, four conditions must be met: the donation must be a genuine gift with nothing received in return (raffle tickets and auction items do not qualify); the donation must be $2 or more; the recipient must be a registered Deductible Gift Recipient (you can verify Canteen's DGR status on the Australian Business Register); and you must keep your receipt. Canteen emails your receipt immediately for one-off donations, or sends a consolidated receipt after 30 June for monthly givers.

Description

When you donate $2 or more to a Deductible Gift Recipient like Canteen, you can claim that amount as a deduction in your tax return. Can I claim a charity donation on my tax return in Australia?
Description

Yes. To claim a charitable donation on your Australian tax return, the charity must be a registered DGR, the donation must be $2 or more, and you can't have received anything of material value in return. Enter the total in the "Gifts or donations" section (D9) of your return. It reduces your taxable income rather than coming straight off your tax bill, so the actual saving depends on your marginal tax rate. A $100 donation at 32.5% works out to around $32.50 back at tax time. Keep your receipt as proof in case the ATO asks. If you've donated to Canteen, your receipt is emailed automatically after each gift.
